This timeless knife holder was created by Christofle and first appeared in the 1862 catalog. Knife rests first appeared in the 19th century, and gradually became the norm for intimate dinners where cutlery was not changed between courses. With no particular decoration, this four-ball knife holder corresponds to the initial shape of these objects. In fact, before they came in many shapes and styles, knife-holders were simple crossbars attached to a double X-shaped support, to prevent them from rolling off the table.
